Founded in 1986, Hanuman published these pocket-sized, handmade books, a format influenced by Indian prayer books. While the press was run out of New York’s Chelsea Hotel, the volumes were printed in Madras (now Chennai), where they were produced on handmade paper utilizing vibrant vegetable dyes, and bound by local fishermen.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe series featured the contemporary avant-garde, queer literature, experimental art, and lesser-known texts in translation, and was particularly notable for its international and intergenerational editorial vision. Present here are two of their more notorious titles, Cookie Mueller’s \u003cem\u003eFan Mail \u003c\/em\u003e... and a signed copy of Bob Flanagan’s \u003cem\u003eFuck Journal\u003c\/em\u003e, both of which resulted in the Indian government leveling obscenity charges against the press. The narrator is a barely disguised version of Indiana himself, while Gregory is loosely based on David Wojnarowicz, and the novel served as the definitive representation of the explosive downtown art scene, depicted as gorgeously and humorously as it is nightmarish.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eHorse Crazy\u003c\/em\u003e was a major literary arrival, bringing Indiana’s wild voice to a greater reading public. This was the first time Indiana and Silverberg worked together, though they had already been friends for several years. In his obituary for the author, Silverberg writes, “We met through mutual friends in the mid-’80s — either ... Lynne Tillman or ... Betsy Sussler — before we ever worked together and began a long friendship. ... I was 26 when Gary’s and Dennis [Cooper’s] first novels were published. I felt as if I was a part of setting a new tone in letters, one born of protest, something uniquely queer, that would wind up defining the era. An object of desire to all his classmates, the main character is a passive figure who permits his lovers to use and pillage him as they wish. As he is passed among men, he inevitably encounters the limits of psycho-sexual pain. Like the protagonist of “My Mark,” the character of George Miles was based on a person from Cooper’s life of the same name: an acquaintance from his youth who later became his lover. Cooper wrote the novel while living in Amsterdam, running primarily on meth.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA legendary novel of the eros of depravity, it has been the subject of critical praise and attention since its publication. Tom Jennings would soon adopt this name for his San Francisco publication, and a number of queer punk publishers began to issue similar zines across the country — seeking to rail against what they perceived to be gay life’s yuppification and capitulation to bourgeois American culture, due to (somewhat) greater political power in the wake of the AIDS crisis.
