Tokyo: Daisan Shokan, 1980
A5判 / 8vo (210 x 150 mm). Profusely illustrated in black-and-white on every page. In photographic wraps with matching photographic dustjacket reproducing the wraps’ design; a bit rubbed at extremities, lacking the obi. Very good.
A stunning work of book design and typography, in addition to its countless striking photographs. A magnificent Japanese photobook, featuring genuinely lavish design, The Bosozoqu was compiled by Seiji Kurata, who in the same year won the Ihei Kimura award for his previous work, Flash Up. Kurata began his career in photography career under Daido Moriyama and Araki Nobuyoshi, though his work has a decidedly more journalistic aesthetic than their expressionist investigations into the Tokyo underbelly.
Along with photographic prints published here for the first time, this work also features numerous photographs previously printed in the rare, legendary bōsōzoku photobooks Bōsō Rettō ‘80 and Bore Up! Bōsō Retto ‘80 Part II.
