[SUBCULTURE, Bōsōzoku]. 別冊宝島158: あぶない少女たち [Bessatsu Takarajima 158: Dangerous Women].
Tokyo: Takarajimasha, 1990

A5判 / 8vo (210 x 148 mm). 211, [228] pp. 4 pp color photographic illustrations at front, black-and-white illustrations throughout. In photographically illustrated wraps. Very good.

The 158th issue of Bessatsu Takarajima, dedicated to ‘dangerous women.’ A spin-off ‘mook’ series from the subculture-focused magazine Takarajima, each issue is an intensive, deep-dive examination of a single subject. The present issue is dedicated to the sukeban, or ‘delinquent girl,’ subculture — with a special emphasis on girl biker gangs.

A notable magazine, it is perhaps best known outside Japan by anime fans, for influencing the creation of Neon Genesis Evangelion’s Rei Ayanami. A Bessatsu Takarajima issue dedicated to mental illness informed how Hideaki Anno understood and wrote the character’s interiority.
