[SUBCULTURE, Bōsōzoku]. BURST [バースト], February 2001.
Tokyo: Byakuya Shobo, 2001
A4判 / imperial 8vo (297 x 210 mm). 138 pp. Profusely illustrated in color and black-and white. In photographically illustrated wraps. Near fine.
February 2001 issue of the essential Japanese countercultural magazine of the late ‘90s and aughts, BURST. The periodical grew out of the biker magazine CRUSH CITY RIDERS, which only published one issue and dubbed itself “a biker’s magazine for the new type of motorcycle-riding delinquents.” The magazine quickly pivoted to general fringe, ‘delinquent’ society, evolving into a general countercultural publication.
With content covering a host of taboo subjects, BURST focused on outlaws, drugs, body modifications, pornography, fetish, and some issues even included photography of corpses. The magazine ran for a decade and was extremely influential — touching every corner of Japanese punk and counterculture.
